Hemorrhoids in Ayurveda is called as Arsha or Piles. A type of disease which gives pain to the patient’s vital force (prana) as an enemy is called Arsha. In Hemorrhoids the veins around the rectum and anus get swollen or bulge out in the form of a thick and circular mass. The anal canal is the part of the large intestine and about 4-5 cm long.

The canal is situated between the rectum and the anus. The end part of the anal canal consists of the anus which is outside and through which waste expels out or bowels expels out. The inner thin lining contains blood vessels. Swelling may be occurring inside and outside around the rectum and anus part of the anal canal.

These hemorrhoids are the painful veins which bulge outside or inside from the anal canal. Basically, piles are the extended form of veins which are masses, like a cushion of tissue. These tissues are full of blood vessels, support tissues, elastic fibers, and muscles.

Signs and Symptoms

Here are the so many factors responsible for this inflamed and swollen of the anal veins.  The appearance of bulge out fleshy swelling (Mansaankura) in the anus. That creates an obstruction to the passage of gases, pain particularly on defecation, loss of appetite and negligence of proper diet. Constipation is the disease in which the Agni of our stomach decreases and the mandagni occurs.

That means unable to digest food material with proper pace and time. Due to which accumulation of half-digested food material in the form of stool inside, or expelling it before time in a watery or semisolid form, which imbalance our three doshas at the anorectal region. When the pressure is made around the anus due to different reasons the veins are expanding. The expansion of varicosity of veins is Haemorrhoids-piles.

These are the general signs and symptoms of Arsha. In addition to these, the following are the specific symptoms of shushkarsha(Dry piles) and Sravi piles.

 a) Shushkarsha

The piles which generally do not bleed is known as shushkarsha piles. This type of piles occurs due to the dominance of Vāyu and Kapha.

 b) Sravi Arsha (Raktarsha):

Sravi Arsha is the type of piles which occur due to the dominance of Pitta and Rakta. In this, the patient passes suddenly streaks of bright red blood with the feces matter. It may bleed profusely leading to the problem like anemia.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

Sometimes you may be noticed other Causes like More Sitting work, sit on the hard platform, pregnancy, Old Cough, Heart Problem, Sedentary Lifestyle, use of alcohol, smoking, not taking balanced diet, to create hindrance in the bowels, eat spicy and oily food, intense itching around the anus, painful or itchy swelling or lump near your anus or rectum, painful bowel movements, bleeding from your anus during or after bowel movements, irritation, and pain around the anus etc.

According to the Charak the piles which occur in the anus that is called Arsha. The other type of piles and wounds that occur on the other parts of the body are only excess flesh. According to the Vaghbhatt, it is called blackheads. In this topic, we only discuss the hemorrhoids and piles only.

Types of Haemorrhoids


Extrenal Of Hemorrhoids

The hemorrhoids or piles are of two types one is hereditary and the second is acquired. According to the other Ayurveda saints, the piles are of two types one is external piles and the other one is internal piles

External Piles

The external piles occur outsides of the anus or rectum. The color of these piles is pure red. When the external piles empty then you don’t feel any pain. But when it is filled with blood then it will give the pain to you and comes out in the form of swollen mass. The pain arises due to the lots of nerve fibers and when this arsh get contracted or the pressure is formed for defecation it will get more pain.

Internal Piles

The internal piles are the common type of hemorrhoids and occur above the opening of the anus. This type is less painful than the external ones. Basically, this occurs in the rectum part of the anal canal. Internal piles are further four types.

  1. First Internal Type

In this, the mass comes out in the lumen of the anal region not seen outside. It is a small swelling on the lining of the anal canal region.

  1. Second Internal Type

This type of internal piles is the form in which it becomes outside of the anus when you go for the defecation.

  1. Third Internal Type

In this, the soft lumps come out from the anus and these are hung from the anus. When the pressure is maintained on the veins of the anus it comes out and when the pressure releases it go back inside of the anus.

  1. Fourth Internal Type

It is a type of internal piles in which mass bulge out from the anus and it is in the hung position. This type cannot go back to the anus. The size of the piles is larger than the other above-said piles.

Ayurvedic Treatments of Hemorrhoids

In Ayurveda various ayurvedic treatments are available. These ayurvedic treatments are simple, easy and ineffective ways. It is beneficial for any age group like old, younger, elder, male, female, etc. in these ayurvedic treatments we use the main herbal remedies like Bhilava, Yam (zimikand or suran), Kutaj, Naagkesar, and Harad. So let’s discuss ayurvedic treatments here.

  1. Massage

Use the bitter Ridged Gourd (Tori) and make a powder of it. Now massage on the hemorrhoids with this powder.

You can also take the satt of lemon. Now use this satt and massage the lemon satt on the piles. Due to which white liquid or watery substance from the piles come out. After this apply the desi ghee on that piled area. You notice that after three days the upper layer of the fleshy mass become dry and piles get dried.

  1. Soak in Oil

Soak the cotton ball in the kasisadi oil and put the soaked cotton ball on the swollen arsha.

You can also use the Kayakalp oil, soak the cotton into the oil and apply to the piles. These two oils are easily available in the market.

  1. Foment (Steam)

Take the leaves of bhang 10 gm, opium 1gm. Now grind the two ingredients and make a paste of it. Now put this paste into the cloth and warm it on a pan. Give the heat to the arsha.

You can also take the leaves of marigold and (Cassia tora) Chakarmard. Grind these ingredients and make a tablet form. Heat this tablet in the pan and apply on the hemorrhoids. You can relief from the pain of piles.

  1. Smoke

Nux Vomica for Piles

Take the Kuchle (Nux Vomica) and put into the fire. Give the smoke of the nux vomica to the arsha. It will help to dry the piles.

Take the dry leaves of neem and grind the leaves to make a powder of it. Now put this powder on the fire and give the smoke of these neem leaves to the hemorrhoids.

You can also take an equal quantity of all these ingredients Betula utilis (Bhojpatra), Luffa echinata(Devdali), Commiphora wightii (Guggal), desi ghee, and sugar. Mix all these ingredients and take smoke of these all. You will see the results.

In the problem of bavasheer, you can take the smoke of human hair,  slough (Sanp ki Kenchul) and the root of aak (Madar or Calotropis gigantea). These are the most beneficial herbal remedies for the treatment of bavasheer.

  1. Paste

a)  Take the turmeric powder and milk bush (Cactus, thuhar). Now soak the turmeric powder into the milk of thuhar and make a paste of it. Apply this paste on the swollen part of piles. It will cure the piles.

b)  Take the root of the bitter ridged gourd and make a powder of it. Take this powder and make a paste of it by adding water to it. Apply this paste on the arsh. It is very beneficial for bleeding piles.

c)  Use the milk of calotropis gigantea, milk of thuhar, leaf of bitter bottle gourd, the fruit of Karanja (Pongamia pinnata). Take an equal amount of all these ingredients and soak into the urine of goat. Apply this paste on the arsha.

d)  Take an equal quantity of the mansil, skin of Sapindus mukorossi (Reetha), turmeric, Iron Sulphate (Hira Kasees). Now grind all these ingredients and put it into the juice of Carissa carandas.

After 3-4 days make a tablet of it. when you need to soak this tablet into the water and make a paste of it. Apply this paste on the hemorrhoids. It is very beneficial for this problem.

  1. Lamp (Batti)

Ridge Gourd for Arsha

Use the seed of bitter ridged gourd and common salt. Grind these two items and put into the kanji. Make a batti (Lamp) of it and use this on the area of piles. After the use of this for 3-4 days you will get results immediately.

You can also take an equal amount of pulp of the fruit of bitter ridged gourd and jaggery. Make a lamp of it and put this lamp into the anus. It will help in the removal of masa.

  1. Deepan

The problem of bavasheer occurs due to the inability of mandagni i.e. constipation. To increase the burning of Agni in the stomach you can take various ayurvedic medicines like Chitrakadi Vati, Gandhak Vati, Rajvati.

Use of lemon and ginger more and more and this will help to cure the problem of hemorrhoids. These ayurvedic medicines are easily available in the market.

  1. Digestion

To increase the digestion of food use the Lavan Bhaskar Churna, Yavani Shadhav Churna, Panchkol Churna.

  1. Vata Dosha

To balance the Vata dosha you can take various herbal remedies like Hingavastak Churna, Lashunadi Vati, Tumbu Vardi Churna, Haritaki Churna, harad with jaggery and in small amount use the castor oil.

Use of Other Ayurvedic Medicines

Generally, the list to treat the hemorrhoids problem is very long. But here we explain some of the ayurvedic medicines that are easy and easily available in the market. Please use these medicines under the supervision of an expert.

  1. Arsh Kalp Vati

Take 2-2 tablets of arsh Kalp Vati every morning and evening empty stomach with the buttermilk or with fresh water.

  1. Abhyarist Drink

Drink the 4-6 tablespoon of abhyarisht mix with an equal amount of water to it. Drink this after eating lunch in the afternoon and evening time.

If you will suffer from the bleeding piles then take abhyarisht with the Ushirasav. Take 3-3 tablespoon of this mixture.

  1. Constipation

If the problem of constipation is persisted then use the Triphala churna with the psyllium husk (Isabagol). Mix these two items in equal quantity.

Now take one tablespoon of this mixture with the lukewarm water and with milk at the time of night.

If you suffer from severe constipation you can use the Divya Churna and Udar Kalp Churna. Take one tablespoon of this mixture at the time of night with lukewarm water.

  1. Sarv Kalp Decoction (300 gm)

Take one tablespoon of this decoction and add into the 400 ml of water. Boil it until the 100 ml remains. Drink this decoction every morning and evening time empty stomach.

  1. Kaya Kalp Oil (50 ml)

After the process of feces use this oil and massage this oil on the internal piles of and external piles of the anus.

You can also use the Kasisadi oil, Peepalyadia oil, and Mushak oil in place of Kaya Kalp oil.

  1. Arsho Gani Vati

Take the 2-2 tablets of this vati with lukewarm water every 3-4 times in a day. It is a very useful remedy for the piles.

Naag Kesar for Arsha

In the excess bleeding use the Naag Kesar 1 gm every three times in a day. In this use the equal part of naag keasr and unani medicine Damul Akben churna. Take this mixture to treat the problem of bavasheer.

General Ayurvedic Tips For Hemorrhoids

  1. Take the seed of the fruit neem 50 gm. Grind it and mix it with 30 gm of jaggery into it. Now make the 2-2 gm of tablets of it. Eat this tablet every morning and evening time with lukewarm water.
  2. Take the skin of Badi and small harad 50-50 gm. Roast this skin in the desi ghee or clarified butter and grind this skin. Mix 100 gm of this churna with an equal amount of sugar in it. Now use 10 gm of this powder with lukewarm water. By this, you will feel great in the problem of constipation and bavasheer.
  3. Safed Katha, burning skin of reetha, mix all these items 10-10 gm. Make powder of it and take this 10 gm of powder with butter and cream for one week regularly.
  4. Marigold Flower 10 gm, Black Pepper 7 pieces and grind it. Put this paste into the water and drink this mixture. It will help to cure the bloody piles. Consume this mixture for seven days regularly.

Melia Azedarach

Take the Melia azedarach (Dake) seeds 20gm, Rasonth 20 gm, sugar 40 gm and mix all ingredients, make a powder of all items. Now use 6 gm of this mixture with lukewarm water every morning and evening. This mixture is useful in the problem of dry and bloody piles.

Useful Food For Hemorrhoids

We here describe some food and vegetable items which you can easily eat in the problem of hemorrhoids.  Like you can use old red rice, wheat, barley, Arhar, mung ki dal ka ras, buttermilk or lassi, ghee, bottle gourd, ridged gourd, spinach, Bathua, Punar nava, Parwal, zimikand, eggplant, rock salt, coriander, cumin, ripe papaya, apple, Munakka, Black pepper (Kali Mirch), Saunth (Dried Ginger), turmeric, Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Garlic etc.


You can’t eat food items like oily food, Halva, Puri, Kachori, refined flour items, Urad dal, Masoor Dal, Garam Masala, pickle, potato, Arabi, etc.
