Shilajit is related to four metals and it is of four types.

  1. Copper (Tamra Garbh) – Blue in color.
  2. Silver (Rajat Garbh) – White in color.
  3. Gold (Suvarna Garbh) – Red in color.
  4. Iron (Lauha Garbh) – Blackish Brown in color – It is used for healing.

According to Sushruta, shilaj is of six types including four types discussed above. Ranga and Seesa are the other two types of silajit. Maharishi Charak has mentioned Loh Shilajit as the best type of salajeet. The energetic qualities of shilaj are Rasa, Virya, and Vipaka.



Shilajit is known by different namesSilajit, Salajeet, Shilaj, Shilamay, Shilaswed, and Shilaniryas. In Yunnani language it is called as Momiyai. Black Asphaltum and Asphaltum Punjabianum are its Latin name. Mineral Pitch or Mineral Wax is its English name.

Properties of Shilajit

According to the ancient science of Ayurveda, qualities of silajit are the best than the other medicines. Because the qualities of shilajit are familiar to qualities present in the gemstones like a diamond.

Saint Attriya said

“Na Soasit Rogo Bhuvi Sadhya Roop

Shilayam Yatr Jayat Prasam”

Effects of Shilajit on Three Doshas

In Ayurveda, there are six tastes – sweet, sour, salty, pungent, astringent, and bitter. These six tastes can cure the doshas which have positive or negative effects on the body. Effects on Three Doshas

Virya is potency. It has a heating or cooling effect of the substance on the body.  If the substance has a warm virya. It will relieve vata and kapha doshas while accelerating Agni. If the substance has a cool virya, it will relieve pitta dosha while reducing Agni. Our digestion process organizes by a force in our body that is Agni. The substance tastes which have a warm virya are pungent, sour and salty. Cooling virya substance taste consists of sweet, bitter and astringent.

Vipaka is the eternal effect. The post-digestive effect of the substance on your body after it is digested. These three types of vipakas are sweet, sour and pungent. But should not be mixed with rasa qualities. Because rasa has different effects on our body. Substances which have sweet vipaka nourish our body. They are mostly alkaline substances that alleviate saliva in our mouth. They also help in elimination.

Substances which have a sweet vipaka taste. They increase kapha dosha and relieve from vata and pitta doshas. Substances with a sour vipaka taste increase the acidity of our stomach. And improve the function of the digestive enzymes which generally helps in digestion. Substances which have a sour vipaka increase the pitta and kapha doshas and pacify the vata dosha. Substances with a pungent vipaka are purifying and decrease the dhatus in our body.  They tend to tighten the tissues of the body and dry them out.

Rasa of shilajit is astringent, pungent, and bitter. The astringent taste has a pungent vipaka and a cool virya. And its qualities are dry and cool. The astringent taste of shilajit will relieve from pitta and kapha dosha while the increase in vata dosha. The pungent taste of shilaj has warm virya and a pungent vipaka. Its major qualities are hot, dry, motile, subtle and light. This taste will relief kapha dosha while increase pitta and vata dosha.

The bitter taste of silajit has a cool virya and a pungent vipaka. Its qualities are light, dry, cool, and motile. The virya taste of salajeet is warm and its vipaka taste is pungent. The warming effect increases pitta dosha. But it is a wonderful substance for the use in vata and kapha doshas.

According to the Ayurvedic textbooks, Charaka Samhita describes the Loh type of shilajit as its best type. It has an iron that has cool, bitter and saline; and pungent properties in vipaka. It also said that silajit has the smell of cow’s urine.

6. Anaemia

Shilajit + Loh Bhasm +Mandoor Bhasm + Abarak Bhasm + Swarn Makshik Bhasm + Saunth + Kali Mirch + Peepal + Kutki +Harad + Baheda + Amla + Nagar Mautha + Biobading + Mulethi

Take these all medicines in equal quantity. And make a powder of all these medicines. Now take empty 500 mg of capsules and fill it with the powder. 13. For Stones

You can take 125 mg shilajit with an equal amount of Talmakhana Asteracntha Longifolia (Talimkhana Hydrophilia Spinosa seed) to remove the stone from kidney and gall bladder.  Take pangavya of talmakhana i.e. root, stem, seed, leaves, and fruit of talmakhana.

Use shilajit with stone licking (Patthar Chat) to cure the kidney and gall bladder stones.

14. Shilajit as a Revitalizer

Silajit acts as a revitalizer increasing physical performance. It provides relief from mental and physical fatigue with the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
